Thoughts on my first TV Series

The past 6 weeks have been amazing. It was a long road to make my first TV series ‘Superior Interiors with Kelly Hoppen’ but it was all worth it when I started to see your reactions to the show on Facebook and twitter. When I started the series I really wanted to help people that needed my help not just people that wanted a room designed by Kelly Hoppen. The 5 families were so different but I hope their experiences helped inspire you in some way for your own home as well.

In the series we covered everything from kitchens to children’s bedrooms and from garages to living rooms. For the Dimartinos, I helped transform a drab garage into a beautiful space for the entire family and showed you how to embrace a theme without making it OTT. In the second episode I helped the Applebbaums renovate a dilapidated kitchen into a fabulous kitchen dining space…I think we also showed the importance of good project management! For the Sharpes, I met my ‘mini me’ Lisa and helped her break her addition to bulk buying to transform a living room into chic multipurpose space. I also helped Kirat move away from choosing a paint colour based on a name and in the end we transformed her kitchen/dining/lounge area into a sophisticated space that really wowed her friends. Finally with the Drewitt-Barlows, I transformed a Saff’s small bedroom into a stunning loft conversion perfect for a little quickly becoming a young lady…and Barrie and I managed to see eye to eye in the end when it came to gold lame ;)

It really was wonderful working with all the families and helping them create a space they loved which worked with their lives. If you haven’t seen the amazing Siemens website http://siemens-superiorinteriors.co.uk/ for the show please do check it out as it has the before and after for each room with even more tips if you were inspired by one of the spaces.

Home refurbishments are tough and even more challenging when you’re trying to do one on television! I really couldn’t have done it without the amazing support from Channel 5, Optomen, and Siemens Home Appliances UK.

If you missed any of the series you can watch the episodes again anytime on the Channel 5 players (UK only) and do check out the great items on Siemens Home Appliances UK website. Their products really are chic and eco savvy plus they have studios across the UK that will help you figure out which items are the best for you.

Thanks again for all your support Taupettes it means the world. Remember to join my Facebook and Twitter for the latest news and more tips.

Thank Heavens for Little Girls: Meet the Drewitt-Barlow Family!

Tony and Barrie from Chelmsford live their lives to the full and have strong views on style which they’ve reflected in their home. Dad’s to 4 boys and 1 girl Tony and Barrie are amazing parents but sometimes being the only girl in a house full of boys can be tough. Kelly came to Saffron’s rescue to help transform her room into a girly sanctuary.

Like most girls Safron had strong opinions on what she wanted but most of all she wanted a cool place she she’d be proud to hang out in with her friends. There were tears on all sides during the process of turning a little girls room into a space for a lovely young lady.

We know Kelly and Saffron were thrilled with the results but let’s hear from Barrie on what it was like to work with Kelly to create a gorgeous room for his daughter:

What made you want to apply to take part in Superior Interiors?

Well, we had recently done an interview for Attitude magazine and one of the researchers on the show read the article and decided to make contact with us. He obviously could tell from the pictures in the article that we really needed Kelly’s help!!! It was almost “Kelly Hoppen 999” lol

What room did Kelly and the SI team work on for you?

At the time when we first met with Kelly and her team, we couldn’t make our minds up on which room to get done first. The whole house needed to be blown up! Basically, we bought the house to knock down and start again, but the permissions still have not come through from the local council so we thought what the hell, let’s just get the things done that we need to get done. The two biggest jobs where the living room and our daughter’s bedroom. Both needed sorting out. After much thought, Tony and I decided that we really needed to get Kelly to add a little bit of femininity to Saffron’s room. We wanted to transform it from our little princess room of cuddly teddy bears and lots of pink, to show how she is developing into an awesome teenager. Saffron needed a room that she could take her friends into and have a private area she could be proud of.

What is Kelly like to work with?

Well, to be honest, as we are both so not into interior design and all that kind of stuff, the only people we knew like this were a couple of the ones of the TV. I was like, ‘Kelly who??’ Lol then after we had spent an hour or two on the internet, it was obvious that she was a very well known designer. I had made my mind up about her though before I met her, and I was determined to make the job as difficult as I could from day one!! I thought she was going to be arrogant, self obsessed prima donna who waltz’s around spending other peoples money! I thought she was going to be very picky and just very snobby. I couldn’t have been more wrong! From the moment we met Kelly, baring in mind that I has already formed the above opinion of her, we all felt comfortable and relaxed. There is something very calming about her that just puts you at ease. Our daughter is always very wary of meeting new people, she has been hurt over the years by senior female figures in her life, so she was a little stand offish to start with, but within days of meeting Kelly, they got on like a house on fire! Kelly walked through our house like a breath of fresh air, almost like a fairy godmother! She wafted her hands around Saffron’s room and transformed it into the room that any child would kill for. After she left my house, I started to put into place some if the other changes that she felt would improve the look of the place, and I have to say, we are well and truly “Hoppened”. White and taupe everywhere-lol!

Kelly said she wanted to work with people who really needed her help. What has Kelly helped you with the most?

The problem for us is that we have been together now for 24 years, we have so much crap that we have bought over that time frame that just should not be there. But memories are hard to get rid of. Kelly helped sort out Saffron’s room, but, she has actually given me the confidence to box up a lot of the stuff we bought over the years and make way for some newer more up to date items that will make the place more ‘with it’.

What have you learned about yourself through the design process?

That I had no taste, even though I thought I did, I can see now that you cannot just keep buying things and expect that they are going to work with everything else in the room. I think I need to look at things with a blank canvas and get rid of so much more.

What was the scariest part of the process for you?

The scariest part of the process for all of us was waiting for the initial design to come back from Kelly and see what she had put together. Until that point we were still really trying to work her out and make our minds up about her. The moment we saw it, we knew she had taken into account the thoughts that Saffron had expressed during their meetings together and that was it…Then we liked her! Lol I guess we had thought that she was just asking for the sake of it. That she was going to go away and work on the project to her own thoughts rather than take into account the thoughts of Saffron. She totally understood where Saffron was coming from and she designed a room with Saffron in mind rather than herself.

What did you think at the final reveal?

We were outside when Saffron went into the room, so didn’t get to see her first reaction, we were right outside the room though so we could hear her reaction and she was very excited. When we went in, it was very overwhelming.

Are you keen to make over other parts of your home now or was this it for you?

Work has already stared. My kitchen finished at the weekend, living room started today and the rest of the house will now follow.

What piece of advice would you give people considering their own home refurbishments?

If you can afford to get a designer in, then I say go for it. For those working on a budget, its important that you know that everyone can have a piece of Kelly Hoppen for £16.99! Get one of her recent books and find the look you really like and design your room around that look!

Can you sum up your experience with Kelly and Superior interiors in one word for us?

You obviously don’t know me, I don’t do one word! I can however, give you two…………….Invigorating / Inspirational

Colour Theory: Meet Kirat Nandra

Kirat is a single independent woman but when it comes to her kitchen she was in dire need of Kelly’s advice. Inspired by the names of the paint colours she had transformed her small kitchen/diner into a riot of colour that was anything but the sophisticated look she was after.

Tight on space and on budget Kirat still wanted a space where she could entertain her friends in style. Kelly helped Kirat create a space that not only reflected the sophisticated style she was after but would really work as a functional kitchen/living/entertaining space.

We think Kelly did an amazing job but let’s hear from Kirat herself about why she wanted to work with Kelly and what the design process was like for her:

What made you want to apply to take part in Superior Interiors?

My friend Barry Sawyer who is the kitchen designer from Bill Brayer Design was contacted by Opteman TV about the new show. He knew I was looking at a refurbishment so he recommended me along with 5 other of his clients, Kelly chose to work with me.

What room did Kelly and the SI team work on for you?

The kitchen and lounge, as this is open plan.

What is Kelly like to work with?

Kelly was very professional, direct and passionate about what she does, it made the whole experience must less painful knowing I could trust someone to help make my flat everything I wanted it to be.

Kelly said she wanted to work with people who really needed her help. What has Kelly helped you with the most?

I really had no idea how to change the flat. My colours were very strong and vivid, I knew I wanted something chic/elegant and grown-up, but really had no idea how to do this. She has totally inspired me (I am now working on the rest of the flat) and shown me how to make the most of a small space. She also explained how colours and one’s home can really reflect ones mood an personality.

What have you learned about yourself through the design process?

I have learnt not to be frightened of change and look at it as an opportunity to learn, grow and see it as a positive challenge.

What was the scariest part of the process for you?

The scariest part was moving out. I love my flat and where I live, I almost felt my umbilical cord was being cut and I was leaving home all over again. There were also a few tense moments where we didn’t think the project would be finished on time. I am such an organized person that I felt the project was not in my control at times and I was at the mercy of builders/delivery people and contractors.

What did you think at the final reveal?

The flat is absolutley stunning; there is nothing about it I don’t like. I am so happy with the end result. I did see the work in progress along the way so it wasn’t a total surprise, plus I chose a number of the items. I love seeing the look on my friend’s faces when they come in, everyone is really blown-away.

Are you keen to make over other parts of your home now or was this it for you?

I have already started work in the bedroom and bathroom. Kelly gave me quite a few tips and I also have been looking through her books for ideas. I am very excited by the whole concept.

What piece of advice would you give people considering their own home refurbishments?

My advice for those considering refurbishment projects would be; hire a very good builder and designer. Start going through books and magazines for ideas of the ‘look’ you is aiming at. Don’t be afraid of change and go with your ‘gut’ feel. Kelly taught me to always have the base colours as neutral and then you can play with colours/texutes and accessories. She is spot on. Then look at what your budget is,what you would like to spend, what you are prepared to compromise on and what is you absolute ceiling.

I always knew what I wanted to spend on the entire flat, so I reigned in cost in certain areas to get what I wanted in others.

Never ever spend out of your means, this is an absolute must, because if you get yourself in debt, you will never enjoy what you have.

Can you sum up your experience with Kelly and Superior interiors in one word for us?

Enchanting.

Room for Everyone: The Sharpes

A lot of people love Kelly’s signature look and Lisa Sharpe is certainly one of those people. Often called ‘Little Kelly’ by her friends, Lisa is a huge fan of Kelly’s style and has tried to recreate the look in her own home

Kelly will be the first to tell you though that her design is based on principals rather than recreating a look. Making sure a space really works for you and your family is the real secret to great design. The Sharpe’s needed living room where Simon could work, the children could relax and Lisa could entertain friends…talk about multi-tasking!

We think Kelly did an amazing job but let’s hear from Lisa what it was like to be able to work with someone that inspired her to create a room that would really work for her family:

What made you want to apply to take part in Superior Interiors?

I have always been inspired by Kelly Hoppen as an interior designer and could only dream of having her do anything in my house. Being on TV was less inspiring, however my husband believed it would be a great idea and make life a lot easier in getting a fabulous room!

What room did Kelly and the SI team work on for you?

The room Kelly and her SI team worked on was our study and living and dining area. It was originally two rooms but now it’s one large room.

What is Kelly like to work with?

Kelly is so dynamic and inspiring. She really gets to know you as a family and focuses on what you like and dislike but also opens your mind to new ideas, she’s a natural teacher who educates you to think differently. Kelly is really collaborative to work with and makes you feel very involved. Her excitement for interior design is contagious.

Kelly said she wanted to work with people who really needed her help. What has Kelly helped you with the most?

I thought I had a good eye and idea about design; however I feel like I have been through the Kelly Hoppen Academy! Every time we met I learnt so much. Kelly has really helped me to look at different materials and textures, not got over the top with something I love and try and keep it simple. So for example get stand out pieces. Create a story board and don’t go for the same fabric for everything. Get inspiration by looking at old and new things. Lighting is the most important thing in a room. I never appreciated that before.

What have you learned about yourself through the design process?

I tend to be impulsive and buy something I love and then another of something similar and more of the same and try and make it all fit in. I have now learned to slow down think about the overall look and planning the entire room.

What was the scariest part of the process for you?

Losing control and handing over the reigns, putting my trust into someone else. Also, choosing the right Sofa.

What did you think at the final reveal?

I thought it was amazing and it exceeded my expectations in every way.

Are you keen to make over other parts of your home now or was this it for you?

I now want to do my Hall and my and my bedroom.

What piece of advice would you give people considering their own home refurbishments?

Plan it out. Look around for inspiration by going to iconic buildings or hotels . Work with different textures, it’s so easy to love a wallpaper or fabric and over use it but that makes it lose its impact and gets boring. Don’t rush and get a storey board so you can see the overall look.

Can you sum up your experience with Kelly and Superior interiors in one word for us?

Inspiring.

Mama Mia! Meet the DiMartino’s

Those of us with garages know that they soon become a catch-all for items that don’t find a ready home inside our houses. Teresa and Vince’s garage was no exception. Piled high with junk, The Dimartino’s wanted to transform their garage into an inviting space for family to have fun in. Vince also wants to have a bar space where he can entertain friends while Teresa still needs a place to do laundry. There were also the needs of Michael, their son with sever developmental disabilities, and big sister Amy.

Kelly had the challenge of meeting the needs of every member of the family and helping the Dimartino’s re-think ‘theme’ designing. With family from Sicily Vince wanted to embrace an Italian American theme a-la The Sopranos which didn’t sit very well with Kelly. In the end Kelly created a multi-functional space that met the needs of each member and was a chic take on their theme. They now have a great space perfect for the family and entertaining friends.

Let’s hear from Teresa about what it was like living through the refurbishment and working with Kelly to create an amazing space for her family.

What made you want to apply to take part in Superior Interiors?

I always wanted a room designed by Kelly and let’s just say we happened to be in the right place at the right time.

What room did Kelly and the SI team work on for you?

Garage Conversion

What is Kelly like to work with?

She listens and takes on board all of the requirements for each individual situation and she is fabulous and fun to work with.

Kelly said she wanted to work with people who really needed her help. What has Kelly helped you with the most?

She has helped us to create a fabulous smart and sophisticated room for our family.

What have you learned about yourself through the design process?

We have learnt to trust people and also that you can venture outside of your comfort zone with amazing results!

What was the scariest part of the process for you?

Vince – Not scared at all / Teresa – The Camera’s

What did you think at the final reveal?

Wow! What a fabulous outcome and so perfect for the whole family.

Are you keen to make over other parts of your home now or was this it for you?

We are always looking for ways to improve our home and will take onboard all of the advice given by Kelly, especially the mood board planning!

What piece of advice would you give people considering their own home refurbishments?

Do lots of research as you can normally source less expensive items that give that equal wow factor! Our lights were a prime example!

Can you sum up your experience with Kelly and Superior interiors in one word for us?

Lucky!
